Alanna of Trebond Timeline and Summary

  • Annoyed at her father's plans for her and her twin brother Thom, Alanna proposes that she and Thom trade places: he'll train to become a sorcerer in her place (which is what he really wants), while she'll train to be a knight in his place (which is what she really wants).
  • But oops, girls can't become knights. NBD: Alanna cuts off her hair to become "Alan."
  • At the palace Alanna's totally overwhelmed with all her new pagely duties.
  • She meets Prince Jonathan, also a page, who seems pretty cool, but she also attracts the ire of Ralon, a bully. Oh, and she befriends George Cooper, King of Thieves. Good guy to know!
  • Ralon beats up on Alanna, eventually breaking her arm. She secretly begins to train in hand-to-hand fighting with George.
  • Eventually, Alanna challenges Ralon to a fight and whoops him good. He leaves the palace in disgrace. Alanna feels bad about having beaten him up.
  • The Sweating Fever strikes the palace and begins taking lives. Alanna uses magic to save Jonathan's life, even though she doesn't want to draw attention to herself.
  • Jonathan's cousin, Duke Roger, returns to court, and Alanna takes an instant dislike to him.
  • When Alanna's period arrives unexpectedly, and Alanna freaks out and asks George to find her a female healer. Luckily, George is an A+ thief and knows how to keep a secret.
  • Sir Myles, a knight who's befriended Alanna, invites her to his estate. There, they explore some ruins and Alanna unearths an ancient sword but is almost killed by darkness while there. Again, NBD.
  • Duke Roger acts super interested in the sword, which sets off Alanna's spidey sense. Further, Thom writes her a letter saying that people who piss off Duke Roger tend to disappear.
  • Alanna is the only page picked to go to a neat city Persopolis with a bunch of squires, but before they leave, Duke Roger tells everyone very pointedly not to go to the Black City because it's too dangerous, hint hint.
  • Once they arrive, she and the other squires get a glimpse of the Black City. Apparently soul-eating Nameless Ones dwell there.
  • Jonathan obviously sneaks out to see the Black City for himself, and Alanna accompanies him. It's about as creepy as you'd expect a place called the Black City to be.
  • They enter a temple and face ten godlike figures. It turns into a battle, and Jonathan and Alanna manage to defeat the Nameless Ones, partly due to her sword, and possibly with the help of gods.
  • The gods snitch on Alanna, but Jonathan tells her that he thinks she's a worthy warrior, a true friend, and his #1 pick for squire. Awww.
  • While they're resting and waiting for a party from Persopolis to come fetch them, Alanna thinks that she'll eventually have to figure out what the deal with Duke Roger is.
  • Dun dun dun.
